SIMIA (the Solicitors’ Indemnity Mutual Insurance Association) is a mutual insurance company whose sole business is the provision of professional indemnity insurance above £1m to firms of solicitors based in England and Wales.

SIMIA was established in 1986 by a group of 38 solicitors' firms with two key objectives: to reduce the costs of professional indemnity insurance for solicitors and to secure the availability of professional indemnity insurance for solicitors.

As a mutual insurance company SIMIA is owned solely by its Members. They are its “shareholders” and are entitled to 100% of both underwriting profit and gains on SIMIA’s investments.

The Members elect the board of directors (partners in firms in England and Wales) who run SIMIA, and the board delegates the day-to-day management of SIMIA to SIMIA Management Company, which is part of the Thomas Miller group. Thomas Miller is an international private company established in 1884 specialising in the management of mutual insurance companies ranging from the UK P & I Club (one of the world’s largest shipping liability insurers) to the Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund (which provides professional indemnity insurance for all barristers in private practice in England and Wales).
